Congratulations!!! Woohoo! You booked your mini session – now it’s time to get ready!
Coordinate Outfits
Let me know if you want my help picking outfits for your mini sesh! I love helping search for the perfect mix. I will always always always recommend wearing comfortable clothes that coordinate and that are not too matchy-matchy.
The easiest way to start is to pick one person’s outfit and coordinate the rest of the clothes around that central piece. For families, it’s often easiest for Mom to pick her outfit first, then kids and Dad. Look for textures and neutrals, avoid big brands or neons. Prints, like flannel or florals, can add a lot of character to photos – as long as it’s not too distracting or bold!
Accessories are an easy way to jazz up your outfit. A hat or jacket can easily be tossed off for variety in your photos. Understated jewelry tells a love story of your favorite pieces. Comfortable shoes that you can walk in are a HUGE must!
OF COURSE – some rules are meant to be broken! My family is getting our pictures taken this week too, and Kingston is wearing a rust colored sweater that has Mickey Mouse on it. We chose this because he LOVES Mickey! Don’t be afraid to break rules that help capture your family exactly how they are.
Show Up 5-10 Minutes Early
Mini sessions are usually only 15-20 minutes long! I PROMISE we will get amazing photos in that short time frame. It doesn’t take long to create the magic. BUT being on time will be key. Mini session days are often chaotic enough, which is why I’ve built a little extra time in between sessions. Being early will make sure you’re not feeling rushed or stressed, the kids are ready, and last minute adjustments to hair and clothes can be made.
Expect Chaos
This one is especially important for my families getting minis! I’m telling you right now – it is okay for your kids to be crazy!! I don’t expect anything less at any family session. They don’t need to smile at the camera constantly, they don’t need to look perfect, they don’t even need to be looking at me the whole time. These photos are meant to capture your family’s personality and relationships. And if your house is ANYTHING like mine, chaos reigns supreme.
PS – feel free to bring your furry family members too! If you’re bringing along your pupper, keep in mind you may want to bring a friend to help hold him for some of the pictures.
Prompts Over Poses
Of course, we’ll take a couple smiling at the camera photos. But also be prepared for me to ask you to follow along with some prompts to get you moving and laughing.
What does that actually sound like? “Okay, now hold hands and walk towards me. Don’t look at me, look at each other! Bump hips!”
That’s it! You’re ready for your mini session. Come relaxed and ready to have fun, and I’ll take care of the rest!
